A Simple Project
For Layla

By John Salyer

"Layla" Alexis Snell

Folks,

Last evening 'ole Ray announced that "simple minded people need to stick to simple projects" ..!   So, here's a look at the 'simple project' . . I've been work'n on while 'ole Ray pokes fun of my solid cherry cradle for "Layla Alexis Snell" . . (newest 'grand' in the family . . Daren and Whitney's daughter).

Notice the raised panel ends of the cradle . . . (solid cherry wood ) . .. )This picture shows one of the side panels. There will be 'swing'n' ends, suspended from a double tong and grove base. All solid cherry . . . this 'simple' project . . teee . . heee! More'n likely some folk could cut it out and assemble in two good 8 hour shifts.Today, 'ole "Luck-Luck" and I spent the day work'n on Layla's cherry cradle. "Luck" didn't think much of all the noise . . seems noisy machines interrupt your rest. He just dozed most of the day . . . and really didn't earn his keep.Peep'n thru one end of the cradle, you can see that we've finally completed both ends . . .
Using raised panels on the ends . . adds a lot . . . along with 'round'n the spindles! The 'frame' is constructed with mortise and tendon joints . . . (hand cut) . . Unless you've had the 'pleasure of cutting these' . . you wouldn't appreciate the frustration (ha..ha...!)Unless you've had the 'pleasure of cutting these' . . you wouldn't appreciate the frustration (ha..ha...!)
'Ole Ray says he don't think it will hold a 10 year old Layla . . ? Maybe we'll get her done in a week or two . . . before the kid starts to walk?I'm using screws (hidden) that will be covered with cheery dowel "plugs" . . to join the ends to the sides . . . Someone once said, "You learn . . by doing!" I checked to find 'cradle mattresses' lengths and widths? Most are 18"x36" . . so that's the size of the one I built! Well, I added 1/2 inch at each end for sheets and blankets! The sizing of the spindles (slats) meets Federal guidelines for "baby cribs", too!"Luck-Luck" says, "All that does not matter!" "What's important is keeping the stove full of wood!" "It's cold outside . . . "
Dear Layla,The last step, yesterday, was to make the wedges that hold the 'contraption' together . . . The last step, yesterday, was to make the wedges that hold the 'contraption' together . . . There are two big 'knobs' on each end that help it to 'swing' if Momma wants to pull you over near her bed at night . .
I covered the screws (that hold it together), with "cherry plugs". That way you shouldn't get your pretty hands or arms scratched . . . I covered the screws (that hold it together), with "cherry plugs". That way you shouldn't get your pretty hands or arms scratched . . . I've ordered you a soft mattress .. but it seems such a shame to cover the pretty inside . . . This has really been a 'fun' project . . something I've always wanted to make! Ohhh, . . in case you are wondering, it comes apart in 11 different sections! That way it will be easy to store in the attic ~ between generations! Just remove the "wedges" and it all comes apart . . ! Sorta the 'ole fashion way to make things. . . . I think you'll enjoy passing it down to your kids, someday?
