John
Morton
Stanton, Powell County Kentucky
Our Heartfelt prayers goes out to
The Family Of John Morton.
Associated Press
STANTON, Ky. - An eastern Kentucky soldier was killed in Afghanistan
when his patrol was confronted by Taliban fighters, his father said.
Jerome Morton said military officials told him his son, Sgt. 1st Class John D.
Morton, 31, of Stanton, was on a mission in the mountainous area around Kandahar
when he was killed. The Pentagon said Friday that Morton's patrol came under
small-arms fire.
"They were on foot, and the enemy saw them first," Jerome Morton said.
"John was hit in the chest."
Morton died Thursday in Shah Wali Kot, Afghanistan. He was assigned to the 74th
Infantry Detachment (Long Range Surveillance), 173rd Airborne Brigade, based in
Vicenza, Italy.
Morton enlisted in the Army as a senior at Powell County High School in 1992,
his father said Friday night.
"He was pretty much set on what he wanted to do," Jerome Morton said.
"It took him all over the world - Somalia, Haiti, Iraq, Afghanistan."
Morton had planned to spend about seven more years in the military before going
into teaching, his father said.
His death shocked the family.
"Oh my goodness, you can't imagine it," said Jerome Morton, 64, a
retired carpenter. "I still have trouble believing it."
Morton was due back in Italy in January, his father said.
Morton was married and had three children, Jerome Morton said. Morton saw the
birth of his third child, a daughter, in September, during a two-week leave in
Italy, his father said. His other children are an 8-year-old boy and a
6-year-old girl.
He also is survived by his mother, Pearl, and two sisters.
On the day of his death, Morton had written his parents an e-mail thanking them
for sending him a book about the Civil War.
"I don't know if he got a chance to read it all or not," Jerome Morton
said. "He said they were getting ready to go out on another mission."
He said his son will be buried at Arlington National Cemetery.
Jerome Morton said he hoped his son's death would refocus attention on the
fighting in Afghanistan.
"It seems Afghanistan has been forgotten," he said. "It's still
not safe there."

My Son's Tour of Duty
By Tony Whisman SGT
Matthew Whisman, Son of Tony and Sherri Whisman, is currently serving with the Army National Guard in Iraq. Matthew
joined the military Police National Guard when he was a freshman in college. He
attends Eastern State Kentucky University. Matthew had just finished his Junior
year of college when his unit got the call to serve in Iraq for 12 to 16 months.
Matthew arrived in Iraq in October of 2004. His job at the beginning was to help
train the Iraq Police and now he does convoy patrol. Matthew's unit is the 617th
MP unit out of Richmond, Kentucky. His unit made national news in April of this
year when they were on patrol and got ambushed and had to kill 27 insurgents. He
also had another close call in March when the Hummer he was riding in hit a
roadside bomb. Matthew said the Hummer saved their lives. Matthew had a mild concussion
and a few stitches, but a week later he was back to work and received a Purple
Heart. Matthew reports that the average temperature is around 100 degrees daily.
I asked Matthew how he feels about being in Iraq and he said " when
you see the young kids and the look in their eyes, you know you're doing
something good ". He also wants everyone to know that
there are good things happening in Iraq. He loves interacting with the Iraqi
children. He says the he understands why the USA is there and hopes that they
will complete their mission soon. Tony and Sherri are expecting Matthew to
return home sometime in November. They are anxious for him to come home
and return to " normal " life. Matthew plans to go back to EKU once he
returns to the states to pursue a degree in Financing. His hobbies include
playing the guitar, like his dad, and golfing. They would also like to thank
everyone for their thoughts and prayers during Matthew's deployment. Your
concern is greatly appreciated and Tony and Sherri send their thanks to everyone.
